What is Job Fulfillment versus Job Satisfaction?

Feb 1

I know that Job Fulfillment is a crucial ingredient for the happiness of an individual and also for the health of a corporation. Being fulfilled with your work means that you see purpose, don’t question your choices and feel empowered, no matter of the circumstance of your job or life. Sounds good?

It is more than just satisfaction.

The way I define the difference is based on the following criteria:
- how is it generated
- how long does it last
- what impact does it have

Job Satisfaction is mostly generated by circumstance. It can last, but doesn’t have to last very long. You can be satisfied with some areas and not with others. The impact is big, but not huge.

Job fulfillment is generated by a way of being. It is intrinsic to who you are in relation to your job. Once you get it, you got it and you can get it back if you lose it. The reason being, that it is YOU that generates it. The impact is lasting and it translates to the rest of your life.

In my previous career there were many aspects that satisfied me: salary, status, working from home, nice coworkers, etc. And yet I was not happy. I felt like I am a victim to politics, schedules and I could not support how we were asked to do our job. I felt that circumstance did not allow me to be happy.

Now I know that I was afraid to take charge and admit that I was in the wrong career. This is not how it has to be though. You don’t need to change jobs in order to be fulfilled. A big part of it is to take ownership and start being in action.

How fulfilled do you feel with your work?
